Red Sox’ Radio Makes a Galling Change; Play-by-Play Will Be Presented in a Talk-Show Format

Red Sox’ Radio Makes a Galling Change; Play-by-Play Will Be Presented in a Talk-Show Format

Big change in baseball coverage Tim Neverett is leaving the Red Sox’ radio booth after three seasons. At first, I asked myself why would rightsholder WEEI break up an excellent duo. Neverett and Sox’ radio immortal Joe Castiglione combined to bring listeners cadenced, entertaining and informative broadcasts; chock-full of anecdotes. They were becoming the accepted voices of New England summers. When I learned why he’s leaving, I bristled. As it turns out, WEEI plans to transition its coverage from a golden play-by-play standard to in-game talk; a decision that renders Neverett superfluous. He’s a play-by-play announcer, not a young […]

Jets poach an offensive tackle from the Patriots’ practice squad

Photo by Darren McCollester/Getty Images for Boston Children’s Hospital It has been a while since the New England Patriots have made a transaction. The team’s last personnel move happened in late November when running back Rex Burkhead was activated to the 53-man roster off the injured reserve list and offensive lineman Matt Tobin released to make room for him. However, the Patriots will soon make another move after one practice squad spot suddenly opened up. Yesterday, the team lost practice squad offensive tackle Eric Smith to the New York Jets ’ active roster. Smith has been a member of […]

Boston Marathon’s Elite U.S. Team Announced: Sarah Sellers Back, But No Shalane Flanagan

BOSTON (CBS) — Last year’s surprise runner-up will be back to run the Boston Marathon in 2019. But Marblehead native Shalane Flanagan will not. It was revealed last week that all four defending champs would be back in Boston for the 123rd Boston Marathon, and on Tuesday, principal sponsor John Hancock released their full roster for the U.S. Elite Team. The women’s field is headlined by Desiree Linden, who became the first U.S. women’s open champion in 33 years with her victory last year. Joining Linden on the 2019 Elite Team are Sarah Sellers, who powered through the rain […]

Eovaldi wanted to remain in Red Sox rotation, not relieve

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi loved what he started in Boston — emphasis on started. “There were a lot of teams that reached out, wanted me to be a closer,” he said. “I view myself as a starter, and that’s something I’ve always done my entire career. And I enjoy doing that. So if I had that choice, I still wanted to be a starter.” After shifting to the bullpen for three World Series relief appearances, including an epic 97-pitch outing in an 18-inning loss , Eovaldi decided last week to stay with the Red Sox for a […]

Champion Red Sox Owe Nearly $12 Million In Luxury Tax

Champion Red Sox Owe Nearly $12 Million In Luxury Tax

NEW YORK (AP) – Boston should be happy to pay this tax bill. The World Series champion Red Sox owe $11,951,091 in luxury tax for having baseball’s top payroll, according to final calculations by the commissioner’s office obtained by The Associated Press. The only other team that owes is the Washington Nationals, who must pay $2,386,097, their second straight year with a bill. Because Boston was more than $40 million over the tax threshold, it became the first team to incur a new penalty put in place for the 2018 season: the top Red Sox selection in next June’s […]

Will the Red Sox go blue chip or on the cheap for the bullpen?

Will the Red Sox go blue chip or on the cheap for the bullpen?

What direction will the Boston Red Sox go on their bullpen? Will it be cheap or will it be expensive? I say go expensive. Just how will the Red Sox approach their bullpen replacement – cheap or blue chip? The Red Sox lost out on Joe Kelly (4-2, 4.39) who accepted an offer from the Dodgers for three years of pitching servitude for $25 MM. “Fighting Joe” was good and bad for Boston in the 2018 regular season and then superlative in the playoffs. Is this now the bar for pitchers such as Kelly or is this just an […]

2018 First Responder Bowl Betting Preview: Boston College vs Boise State

2018 First Responder Bowl Betting Preview: Boston College vs Boise State

There hasn’t been much line movement on the Boston College vs Boise State scrum at Cotton Bowl Stadium on 12/26. In fact, the betting odds have been remarkably stable for more than a week. The Boise Blue are a (-3) favorite on the point spread and carry a (-145) moneyline. Despite BSU’s low-scoring loss to Fresno State in the MWC title game, a middle-of-the-road O/U total (55) may reflect the Eagles’ failure to take over games on offense against quality foes late in the season. BC quarterback Anthony Brown overcame great obstacles to get himself healthy for the 2018 […]

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Starting line-up rolling again “Both halves. Both halves they were really good. We were trying to limit (Aron) Baynes’ minutes and I was not all that excited that we had to put him back in the first half, but we went through that kind of nasty stretch in the second quarter. But then I thought, other than that we played pretty well all night. […]
