Bruins do not touch Prince of Wales Trophy, buck recent trend

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Boston Bruins bucked the latest trend and stayed with their own superstitions by choosing not to touch the Prince of Wales Trophy on Thursday. The Bruins, led by captain Zdeno Chara , who was awarded the trophy given to the Eastern Conference champions by NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, also did not touch it in 2011 and 2013. They won the Stanley Cup in 2011 and lost in the Stanley Cup Final in 2013. “It is what it is, right?” Bruins center David Krejci said. “I mean, every team has got their different, I guess, […]

What the Bruins are doing to frustrate Hurricanes captain Justin Williams

Carolina’s Justin Williams tries to knock in the rebound past Tuukka Rask during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. RALEIGH, N.C. — Hurricanes captain Justin Williams has been through the playoff grind before. But the veteran’s frustrations reached an all-time high during the last two games of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Bruins. Williams, aka Mr. Game 7, went out of character beginning in Game 2 when he retaliated to a Brad Marchand cross-check. The Bruins took a 4-0 lead on a Matt Grzelcyk’s goal on the ensuing power play. That moment served as a microcosm […]

Is this the only way the Celtics keep Kyrie Irving in Boston?

Is this the only way the Celtics keep Kyrie Irving in Boston?

Getty Images BOSTON, Mass. – Everyone seems to already have Kyrie Irving packing his bags this offseason and leaving the Boston Celtics. But there may be one last hope of keeping the star point guard. Frank Isola of The Athletic reports that despite the New Orleans Pelicans landing the No. 1 pick (aka Zion Williamson) in the NBA draft, Anthony Davis still wants out of the organization. That has led the Celtics to consider putting together a trade package for Davis that would entice Irving to stay in Boston, rather than head to, say, the New York Knicks. The […]

Patriots sign linebacker Jamie Collins

Cleveland Browns outside linebacker Jamie Collins lines up against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots pulled off their second reunion in as many weeks, signing linebacker Jamie Collins, a league source confirmed Wednesday. Collins already is in Foxborough and is expected to participate in some on-field work Thursday as the team continues its voluntary offseason workout program. The signing comes a week after veteran tight end Ben Watson agreed to return for a second tour of duty in New England. The Patriots traded Collins to Cleveland for a third-round pick on Oct. 31 of the 2016 season, and the […]

Chavis lifts Red Sox over Rockies 6-5 in 10 innings

Chavis lifts Red Sox over Rockies 6-5 in 10 innings

BOSTON — Michael Chavis had a simple thought as he walked to the plate. “A single scores him. Don’t try to be a Superhero and hit a home run or anything like that. Just need one,” Chavis said Wednesday night after his walk-off single in the 10th inning gave the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies. J.D. Martinez homered in his third straight game and Boston recovered after blowing a five-run lead. Martinez hit a two-run shot and Eduardo Rodriguez struck out 10 over six innings for the Red Sox, who won for the 12th […]

Bruins take 3-0 lead in Eastern Conference finals

Bruins take 3-0 lead in Eastern Conference finals

The Bruins got on the board first when Chris Wagner scored in the second period. RALEIGH, N.C. — The Bruins were the more skilled team, the more patient team, and the team with the better goaltending. That’s a deadly triple threat in the playoffs, and the primary reasons they are one win away from the Stanley Cup Final. Boston survived a first-period surge from Carolina, scored in the first 81 seconds of the second, and rode ace netminder Tuukka Rask to a 2-1 win in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Down 2-0, ‘Canes seek special-teams spark against Boston

Down 2-0, ‘Canes seek special-teams spark against Boston

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — It doesn’t matter which team goes on a power play. The Carolina Hurricanes rarely seem to wind up with the advantage. Of all the teams that made it out of the first round of the playoffs, the Hurricanes have been the league’s worst —when they’re up a man or when they’re down one. They are scoring on just 11% of their power plays in this postseason while killing less than 70% of their penalties. “The special teams haven’t been great, obviously,” defenseman Justin Faulk said Monday, “and that’s easy to see.” They provide a sharp […]
